I suppose we all thought we knew Miss. Beadle, the sweet, innocent school teacher who kept Laura Ingalls on the right track and from too many fights with nemesis, Nelly Olson. We thought we knew her...The cover of her life’s book is far from the cover we all saw on our TV screens...In reality, Miss Beadle was a fictional character, created from the mind of Michael Landon, and played by the very 3 dimensional and fascinating, Charlotte Stewart. The cover is lovely, but the book - life story - underneath is wonderfully fascinating.I had heard the phrase, "Sex, Drugs, and Rock-and-Roll," while growing up in the 70s. Even saw bits and pieces on TV in between watching Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons, like all kids of my GenX age. Little did I know that when not breaking up fights between Laura and Nelly, Miss Beadle - the real Charlotte - was living a very different life than she did on the Prairie! One defined by the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll of the era. She was a walking, talking, living being whose life was very much the thing of TV lore, real, gritty, and enthralling.It is apparently the sweetness and charm of Miss Beadle was very much real, as Ms. Stewart’s story is heartwarmingly told, including her early life with her rural, farm family, or the friendships she enjoyed over a lifetime. No one can have that many friends or so many warm memories unless they were and are a truly charming and nice person. There are many moment’s Ms. Stewart’s stories are not just heartwarming, but make you wish you were in the room with her, enjoying her rich life. Maybe even sharing a joint while listening to one of her household-name-friend’s playing a new recording.But wow... this lady’s life is not what one would have imagined!Told through memories and stories, including her early days in Hollywood, her years at school, and her many jobs as an actress, Ms. Stewart has a first hand experience of life in Hollywood during a transitional, vibrant, drug-fueled time. She knew some of the biggest names to grace our TV and film screens, not just as co-stars and colleagues, but as friends, drinking partners, and often, bed partners.So often autobiographies are either 1. watered down or 2. overblown.Ms. Stewart’s is a roller coaster of fun and funny, tragic and real, charming and sweet stories and memories she’s not afraid or embarrassed to share. She learned from a lifetime of lessons and she sheds light and life upon them in ways that inspire one to perhaps not feel alone if they’re going through their own issues (such as alcoholism) or feel encouraged to go after dreams with hard work and commitment (such as acting).We never truly know people around us, but if we take the time to listen to their stories and get to know them, we might come away with a new friend and fascinating stories... Reading her life’s story makes me wish I could meet this interesting woman, get to know her, and perhaps become one of a lifelong list of friends... but I’ll settle for this really great read.
