I have always believed in the power of pace handicapping, and I have relied on the pace figures that are provided on most past performance sheets nowadays. Looking for lone speed or a potential pace meltdown? Those are fairly easy to locate, and the problem is that they are fairly easy to locate. You and every other handicapper land on the same horses.But what about the races that don't have those easy to locate pace aberrations? Brohammer's book, a classic that I had long known about but refused to read, turns out to be just what is needed to find those hidden gems that most handicappers overlook. I'm not talking about the 20-1 longshot. I'm talking about 6-1 or 8-1 horses, that most of the crowd has overlooked. Horses with good turn times that have been running against tougher fields? Brohammer's pace analysis will find those animals and others as well.There is math, and I'll be the first to admit that Brohammer could have done a bit better job of explaining his methodology. This is not a book that I'd recommend to anyone who is a casual horseplayer, although there are pearls of wisdom provided throughout this book that require no math whatsoever. And yes, the reproductions of many of the past performances and results sheets are blurred and difficult, if not impossible, to decipher. DRF should be embarrassed. WARNING: don't buy this book in any e-book format. You will not be able to read any of the pps!!! Shell out the money for a book....a real book.If you are a serious horseplayer, with a little, very little, facility for math, the methods that Brohammer provides will make you a better handicapper. If you know how to use a spreadsheet, then you can very easily transfer Brohammer's methods to them.I could kick myself for putting this book off for as long as I did. I've already hit races at Belmont and Delaware Park that I know I would have missed without Brohammer's methods.
